“The Role of a product manager is to discover products that are valuable, useable, and feasible

Marty Cagan

Based on your strategy, what solution do you need to be successful in the market?

  • What are the key needs or problems that the customers face?
  • What is the UX / user experience that you want to provide to your customers?
    • And the full customer journey around that?
  • Do they expect a one off product, or a lifetime solution?
  • What price are they willing to pay for those values?
    • Are customers looking for the best product out there?   or does it need to be good enough for a certain price?
    • How can you do value engineering to ensure the best product at the right price?
  • Who are the competitors?
    • How will you differentiate against them?
  • How can you ensure that product management and R&D are aligned and working as a team?
  • How can you ensure alignment with the other departments in the company to make sure the product hits the market in a smooth way:
    • marketing communications (right message, to the right stakeholders, via the right channels)
    • operations: is the organisation ready to produce / source / stock the product?
    • sales: are sales teams prepared to sell the product, with the right sales tools, do they have competitive kill sheets, etc
    • support: are they trained to support whatever questions or issues may come from the field?    Are we monitoring early returns and can we predict overall product reliability?
